In order to provide optimal care for our our Nephrologists also treat the following conditions:
Acute Kidney Injury
Acute Kidney Injury, also known as Acute Kidney Failure, occurs suddenly within a short period of time; it can be caused by a variety of reasons. Our Nephrologists at California Kidney Specialists (CKS) will perform a complete work up, which may include a kidney biopsy and/or adjustment of medications to determine treatment plan.
Anemia
The kidneys produce a hormone that helps in the production of red blood cells. When Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) develops, the level of that hormone, Erythropoietin, is lower than it should be. Oftentimes, hormone replacement is necessary to prevent severe anemia and symptoms that can include shortness of breath and fatigue. Our Nephrologists at CKS will perform an anemia work up and create a specialized treatment plan for our patients
Edema
Edema is swelling caused by excess fluid and when related to CKD, it most commonly occurs around the ankles and in the legs. It can sometimes happen around the eyes. Our Nephrologists at CKS will work with the patient to find the exact cause and create a treatment plan that may require specialized medications to help reduce this symptom.
Hematuria
Hematuria is blood in the urine, it can be either visible to the naked eye or microscopic. Our Nephrologists at CKS will work with the patient to find the exact cause and create a treatment plan.
Kidney Cancer
If a patient is diagnosed with a kidney mass, our Nephrologists at CKS will refer the patient to a Urologist to determine if removal is necessary. If Kidney Cancer is diagnosed in a patient, they will be referred to both Oncology and Urology.
Kidney stones
Kidney Stones are stones that develop within the kidney or the urinary tract. They may cause pain, urinary tract infections, hematuria, and/or urinary blockage. Our Nephrologists at CKS will work with the patient to find the exact cause, which often includes 24 hour urine testing and create a treatment plan that may also include referral to a Urologist to remove existing stones if necessary.
Lupus
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is an autoimmune inflammatory disease that can affect many organs, but can also specifically affect the kidneys. A kidney biopsy may be necessary for diagnosis. Our Nephrologists at CKS will work with the patient to find the exact cause and create a treatment plan.
Nephrotic Syndrome
Nephrotic Syndrome occurs when a large amount of protein spills into the urine. There are many different causes, including but not limited to, diabetes, glomerular disease, and autoimmune disease. A kidney biopsy is usually necessary to make an exact diagnosis. Our Nephrologists at CKS will work with the patient to find the exact cause and create a treatment plan.
Polycystic Kidney Disease
Polycystic Kidney Disease is a common genetic disease that leads to enlarged cysts and decreased kidney function over time. There are new treatments available which can help slow the progression to End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Our Nephrologists at CKS will work with the patient to create a treatment plan.
Renal Osteodystrophy
Renal Osteodystrophy, also known as Renal Bone Disease, can occur in CKD and ESRD patients and can cause bone pain. This can be slowed or prevented with dietary measures and medications. Our Nephrologists at CKS will work with the patient to create a treatment plan.
Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D deficiency is very common, especially in patients with CKD. The kidneys play a major role in creating the active form of vitamin D. Our Nephrologists at CKS will work with the patient to create a treatment plan.
