As a patient living with Kidney Disease, hemodialysis is one of the treatment options you may want to consider.
- What is hemodialysis?
- Is hemodialysis right for me?
Hemodialysis is the most common way to treat kidney failure. It is a treatment that uses a machine to filter wastes, salts and excess fluid from your blood when your kidneys can not. The process can help you carry on an active life despite having kidney disease. Hemodialysis requires you to follow a strict treatment schedule, take medications regularly and, usually, make changes in your diet. It is a serious responsibility, but you don’t have to manage it alone. You’ll work closely with the CKS health care team, including a kidney specialist and our other professionals who are experienced in managing hemodialysis. Hemodialysis can help your body control blood pressure and maintain the proper balance of fluid and various minerals in your body.
You can receive hemodialysis in a dialysis center or at home. Your frequency of treatments will vary depending on which dialysis option you select. Hemodialysis will improve your quality of life and increase your life expectancy.
Determining if hemodialysis is right for you is based on your lifestyle, other possible medical conditions, body size and shape. Talk to your CKS medical team about whether hemodialysis would be best for you. If you have severe chronic kidney disease and you have not yet developed kidney failure, our medical experts at CKS are committed to helping you determine what option would work best for you.
